Our Website Redesign

Company Announcement

The J O Y C O M P L E X website is undergoing ongoing maintenance.  It will change from day to day for at least a month while I decide on a suitable look. It is transitioning from a  prêt-à-porter look to one of curated design brought forth by using SEMPLICE.

I asked trusted designers and associates for their opinions to try to ascertain the direction that I wanted to take JC visually.   What I hope to capture is a successful combination of structure and color such that a good description would be if you mixed Viejo San Juan and Reykjavík

We´ll see how that goes.

I chose to use SEMPLICE after speaking to noted graphic designer and J O Y C O M P L E X associate Ricardo Sabatini of RS Design.  It has constraints but you can get around them if you really wanted to. I like working with some constraints because it forces me to come up with creative ways to build around them.  Some sort of boundary is good for me and the way I create.

Check back to see how things have changed.

New Company Wide Policy: Stopping Our Use of Polystyrene

J O Y & Co.

J O Y & Co.

EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY

2018.11.17. /J O Y C O M P L E X  will no longer use polystyrene. In the past if a product from a vendor arrived in a box filled with polystyrene packing beads our policy was to re-use the material for one of our subsequent shipments.

We think it is good policy to reuse as much shipping material as possible - primarily boxes and protective fill - so we can pass on those savings to others and more importantly, to do our part to slow those items from entering the waste stream.  Reusing material also saves energy since none is wasted in the production of replacements.

But, this is not the case with polystyrene foam.

The material is ubiquitous and it gets everywhere. Small pieces float on water and in the air.  It doesn't break down through natural processes and on a personal note, I think everyone hates dealing with them.

There has to be something better. They just must be incredibly cheap to produce - like a by-product of some industrial activity - so better alternatives probably can't get a foothold to compete.

So we are just going stop using them. I'm sure there are perfect case uses - like the the internal lining of a refrigerator - but not for one use products that will be thrown away.

That is why we will no longer be using or re-using one use polystyrene.  We will also be contacting all of our vendors and will ask if they would consider joining us in our effort in eliminating polystyrene waste.

IUD Earrings Featured on Last Week Tonight

Last Week Tonight is a hilarious, informative, and often controversial satirical late night news program on HBO.  That's a lot of adjectives.  It's also a really good television program.  I usually DVR it on Sunday so I can watch it Monday morning.

This morning I received a message from a customer that one of my designs was used doing a segment on the show.  Which design? See for yourself around 12 minutes and 30 seconds into the segment.

Those are definitely our vintage steel IUD earrings! They are available on our Etsy store for $25 + shipping.  Here's a link.  Ten percent of the the profits from every sale from our collection of IUD jewelry goes to Planned parenthood.

IUD Earrings - match your IUD pendant!

These earrings are 3D printed in bronze infused steel and have nickel free hooks.  They are also available in cast metal and nylon.

Why did we make these IUD Earrings? The 2016 election.  On November 9th by noon on the day after the election, Google searches for IUDs were spiking—one of the most popular search terms overnight was, “Get an IUD now.”

These IUD earrings were made to be worn to show that any changes Trump and the GOP might make negatively effecting women's reproductive issues would be met with protest. It's a small thing but small things can lead to big changes - both political parties believe that. You know where we stand.

Thank you Last Week Tonight and thank you John Oliver for highlighting the importance of women’s reproductive freedom. And also thanks for using our IUD earrings to illustrate the point!

The Wonder Women Project

About The Wonder Women Project

Hedy Lamarr

Pin No. 01

The Wonder Women Project is an attempt at education - my education at the very least. I want to learn more about amazing female inventors, scholars, and minds because I believe it’s good to learn about them.  When I learn about someone amazing, I want to share  that knowledge with all of you.

I believe that the more role models we have to inspire great things in us the better the world can be.

Amazing women should inspire young girls to be amazing and inspiring women.  Being female shouldn’t get in the way of success.  It shouldn’t be a hardship or something to overcome.  Doing a great deed or creating an amazing device shouldn’t have to be prefaced with the phrase “despite being a woman.” Too many times it is, especially in the past when women had to toil to get their ideas and talents across in a male-dominated society.

And when I say the past, I mean the now.  Women are still not on equal terms with men. They are still seen as inferior. They still earn less than men.  They are subject tremendous ridicule and harassment

This has to stop.

We need to see women as more than victims, objects, or "other."

We need to see women as heroes.

Amelia Earhart Apple Poster

Apple Computer "Think Different" poster featuring Amelia Earhart. This poster is framed and hangs in my office.

Amazing women should inspire young boys to become amazing and inspiring men.  It is OK for women to inspire men;  for women to be heroes.  Young boys should put posters of women on their walls - not as pinups - so that by looking up at the poster before they go to bed they will be inspired and reminded that by working hard they can achieve their goals. Female role models should be seen and emulated by both girls AND boys.

Amazing women should inspire us all. It should be absolutely normal to see women in this way.

This is why I started the Wonder Women project.
