The Story

I was walking down the street and noticed how many people that were wearing Apple’s ubiquitous earbuds - myself included.  It was crazy! All these different people with the exact same white wires sticking out of their ears.

People wore different clothes and accessories to suit their sense of style, but the EarPods they had were all the same.

I stopped to get some cofee and while I was waiting for it to cool I was unable to stop thinking about all the EarPods. I wondered if there was a simple way I could make an EarPod accessory that looked fun, could express individuality, and be minimally intrusive (and be inexpensive).

Looking out the window,  I saw a fashionable woman in her mid-20’s waiting to cross the street.  She had thus boho-chic look going on and had these really awesome earrings that kept bumping into her EarPod wires.

Light Bulb

Yep.  That's when it clicked. Why not make earrings for EarPods interrogbang

Using laser sintered nylon I could use 3D printing to make these things in all sorts of colors and designs. Inexpensively.

Fun. Different. Simple. Cheap!

Everything I wanted.

Joy Complex Design Selected By WALLA!

So this is kind of neat. A Joy Complex design selected by WALLA will be an official product!

In Joy Complex news, I was one of the winners of a 3D music merchandise design contest that the website Pinshape was running along with the LA based band WALLA. My design (some BIC lighter sleeves that integrated Walla's logo) become official band swag and I get royalties for every sale! Not to shabby.

I'm really pleased that the guys in WALLA liked my design enough to make it part of their own collection of official music merchandise.  3D printing is really making quite the stride into the mainstream now!

Out of purely selfish desires to pay my bills, I hope Walla becomes the next big thing.

If you're interested in reading a press release announcing the contest winners, here you go.

While you're here, check out their new single "The Kids Are Alright"

ABOUT WALLA:

WALLA formed out of different times, places, and hardships. By random chance, these 5 individuals found each other through digital means and a common love for inventing new wavelengths. After forming a strong friendship and working tirelessly on different prototypes of songs, they finally decided to begin the project, now officially called, WALLA. The name is a reference to the sound and murmur resulting from a large crowd of people. The sound also reflected confusion and hopelessness during a time of tough life decisions and rough financial circumstances. But through sheer perseverance and the culmination of different influences (everything from pop, funk, samba, rock, metal, folk, disco, and neo-psychedelia) WALLA quickly made an indestructible pact to maintain strong melodies and lyrics, putting above and beyond care and effort into each decibel of sound produced (almost to the point of neuroticism), and allowing each song to breathe its own life and soul. "We loved the idea of not knowing what type of song we would come up with next."

Nine Months Later – Joy Complex and Sound Wave Jewelry

Joy Complex Geo Logo

Nine Months In

I'd like to take the time to thank you and share a few of the neat things that have happened to Joy Complex in the nine months it's been operating . . . before the holiday season kicks off and you attention is elsewhere focused. 😉

 Sound Wave Jewelry

What started as a lark has grown into something more. Joy Complex is now a recognized name - at least in the 3D Print community - in no small part thanks to friends, family, and some really passionate customers. Thank you all for making Joy Complex a reality. I am excited to see what 2015 has in store!

Joy Complex started with the "I Love You" sound wave collection. I'm happy to say it is still very popular. In fact, sound wave jewelry has grown to over 12 languages (and counting) - and includes pendants, earrings, and rings.  My earrings are even a part of Shapeways 2014 Holiday Gift Guide!

Custom sound wave commissions have been especially in demand - and gratifying to make.  You wouldn't believe the touching stories behind many custom requests - from laughing children to a grandfather's last words - it has been a pleasure to turn voices into cherished keepsakes. People love sound wave jewelry (thankfully!).Sound Wave Jewelry

In that vein, we recently began turning infant heartbeats into sound wave jewelry!

I am especially proud to announce our partnership with Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania's premier elective ultrasound center -InSightImaging -  so we can offer their clients the best possible representation of their child's heartbeat.

Other partnerships with centers around the United States are forthcoming.

Collaboration With Stilnest

I am alsStilnest & Joy Complexo pleased to announce that I have been made a featured designer at the Berlin, Germany based Stilnest. I was honored when they asked if I could design an exclusive sound wave jewelry collection for them.

It was an amazing experience and I am over the moon with the result -SoundScapes.  Each piece is a sculptural landscape representing the words "I - Love - You."  You can find out more about the collection and my inspirations for it here.

A Baton

One last thing to "note" concerning sound waves.  I recently created a conductor's baton using the famous first four notes from Beethoven's 5th Symphony.  You know, "duh-duh-duh-duuuum!" Well I got it in the hands of Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra conductor, Lawrence Loh and he liked it!  Check out his Instagram photo below! It was even featured in 3DPrint.com!

Thanks again for making Joy Complex a reality!  And, to leave you with some words of wisdom from Oscar Wilde:
remember, be yourself; everyone else is already taken.

See A Sound Wave

I just saw this amazing video courtesy of NPR about Schlieren Flow Visualization. In it you can actually see a sound wave form and spread as it propagates through the air.

What an amazing technique!

If you don't have the set up to produce those wonderful images of sound traveling through the air, you might want to check out some jewelry from our Sound Wave Collection. We have the words "I Love You" in ten (and counting) different languages frozen in silver so you can wear them around your neck or whispering in your ears.

We can also do custom commissions using your voice so you can give an extra special gift to someone you love!

Isn't sound fascinating and beautiful?
