I Walk With Kubra Khademi

Kubra Khademi Pendant

I Walk With Kubra Khademi Pendant

In October 2014, there was a video showing what Shoshana Roberts encountered walking down the street in New York City during a 10 hour period. She "wore jeans and a crew neck t-shirt." There was a lot of news about that video including an Op-Ed by the artist published by The New York Times. She's currently tweeting about tv shows on Netflix and fun times she had sledding. On March 7th, 2015, Afghan artist Kubra Khademi donned a suit of armor to protest the mistreatment and harassment of women in Afghanistan. "Her audience, almost entirely male, threw insults and stones, and quickly gathered into crowds. Most seem to have missed her point, leering at her throughout, with some trying to grope her from behind around the armor.[source]" She walked for a total of 8 minutes before she had to jump in a car and flee for her life.

Do you know how much coverage there has been in United States media as of March 15? Let's just say, if you looked in The New York Times for any coverage you would find ONE article. From the Associated Press.

Since her 8 minute walk she has suffered death threats "warning Khademi that she was 'a feminist activist who will be killed soon' . . . She has already narrowly escaped an attack by three men, and is living like a fugitive, but has no plans to scale back her art or ambitions. “I would never be stopped … artists can’t be stopped. For now, I’m just waiting for this to die down.” [source]

I created the "I Walk With #KubraKhademi Pendant" so that people can show solidarity with brave women like Kubra Khademi and raise awareness about her art and her struggles. This pendant is modeled on Kubra's armor - symbolic of what women have to endure around the world - from insults and cat calls in New York, to stones and death threats in Afghanistan.

Each pendant I sell makes $20.00 USD. On a quarterly basis, ALL profits from the sale of this pendant will be donated to Women for Afghan Women - a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to securing and protecting the rights of disenfranchised Afghan women and girls in Afghanistan and New York, particularly their rights to develop their individual potential, to self-determination, and to be represented in all areas of life: political, social, cultural and economic.

Please spread the word about Kubra. I would also like to thank mariemeierart for getting Kubra on my radar. You should check out the piece she is creating showing her support for Kubra.

Joy Complex Design Selected By WALLA!

So this is kind of neat. A Joy Complex design selected by WALLA will be an official product!

In Joy Complex news, I was one of the winners of a 3D music merchandise design contest that the website Pinshape was running along with the LA based band WALLA. My design (some BIC lighter sleeves that integrated Walla's logo) become official band swag and I get royalties for every sale! Not to shabby.

I'm really pleased that the guys in WALLA liked my design enough to make it part of their own collection of official music merchandise.  3D printing is really making quite the stride into the mainstream now!

Out of purely selfish desires to pay my bills, I hope Walla becomes the next big thing.

If you're interested in reading a press release announcing the contest winners, here you go.

While you're here, check out their new single "The Kids Are Alright"

ABOUT WALLA:

WALLA formed out of different times, places, and hardships. By random chance, these 5 individuals found each other through digital means and a common love for inventing new wavelengths. After forming a strong friendship and working tirelessly on different prototypes of songs, they finally decided to begin the project, now officially called, WALLA. The name is a reference to the sound and murmur resulting from a large crowd of people. The sound also reflected confusion and hopelessness during a time of tough life decisions and rough financial circumstances. But through sheer perseverance and the culmination of different influences (everything from pop, funk, samba, rock, metal, folk, disco, and neo-psychedelia) WALLA quickly made an indestructible pact to maintain strong melodies and lyrics, putting above and beyond care and effort into each decibel of sound produced (almost to the point of neuroticism), and allowing each song to breathe its own life and soul. "We loved the idea of not knowing what type of song we would come up with next."

Announcing the world’s first 3D printed modular custom jewelry system.

Modūlus jewelry is configurable by customers and open to designers. It is the worlds first modular custom jewelry system. A completely new vision in jewelry design made possible through 3D printing. The modūlus collection can be seen and is available for initial purchase here. It is at the forefront of the custom jewelry movement.

The key to modūlus are the connectors - viro (male) and virino (female).  From these basic parts anything is possible.  Rings literally snap together to match your mood, your outfit, your own style.  Pendants morph into new colors and textures.  Rough metals nestle with soft polished metals.

Variations on the classic band make up the first collection dubbed Bando. Even with simple building blocks pleasing rings can take shape that can match any mood and any style. Different bands have different modūlus conectors - the viro and virino. As amazing as it seems, this collection can be configured in over 1,700 ways.

The current collection features eight different Bando:

• Bando Viro - a 1mm band with two Viro connectors

• Bando Virino - a 1 mm band with two Virino cavities

• Duoble Viro - a 1 mm band with four Viro connectors

• Duoble Virino - a 1 mm band with four Virino cavities

• Granda Bando Viro - a 2 mm band with two Viro connectors

• Granda Bando Virino - a 2 mm band with two Virino cavities

• Duoble Granda Viro - a 2 mm band with four Viro connectors

• Duoble Granda Virino - a 2 mm band with four Virino cavities

These eight rings give a large number of possible style combinations fit for every style at any budget.

However, to show what is possible with modūlus, I created a showcase piece of the first collection: Triangulo. It shows what is possible though more complex implementation of the viro and virino. This beautiful ring can be configured in over 286 ways.

The Triangulo is made of three parts:

• Triangulo Sen

• Triangulo Ene

• Triangulo Sen

Because Bando and Triangulo are part of the modūlus system other designs can be created that are compatible and complimentary to the original design. Thus all designs are in effect infinitely customizable. Modūlus is the future of custom jewelry.

If you would like more information about modūlus or a notification when more designs are added please use this special sign up form.

Nine Months Later – Joy Complex and Sound Wave Jewelry

Joy Complex Geo Logo

Nine Months In

I'd like to take the time to thank you and share a few of the neat things that have happened to Joy Complex in the nine months it's been operating . . . before the holiday season kicks off and you attention is elsewhere focused. 😉

 Sound Wave Jewelry

What started as a lark has grown into something more. Joy Complex is now a recognized name - at least in the 3D Print community - in no small part thanks to friends, family, and some really passionate customers. Thank you all for making Joy Complex a reality. I am excited to see what 2015 has in store!

Joy Complex started with the "I Love You" sound wave collection. I'm happy to say it is still very popular. In fact, sound wave jewelry has grown to over 12 languages (and counting) - and includes pendants, earrings, and rings.  My earrings are even a part of Shapeways 2014 Holiday Gift Guide!

Custom sound wave commissions have been especially in demand - and gratifying to make.  You wouldn't believe the touching stories behind many custom requests - from laughing children to a grandfather's last words - it has been a pleasure to turn voices into cherished keepsakes. People love sound wave jewelry (thankfully!).Sound Wave Jewelry

In that vein, we recently began turning infant heartbeats into sound wave jewelry!

I am especially proud to announce our partnership with Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania's premier elective ultrasound center -InSightImaging -  so we can offer their clients the best possible representation of their child's heartbeat.

Other partnerships with centers around the United States are forthcoming.

Collaboration With Stilnest

I am alsStilnest & Joy Complexo pleased to announce that I have been made a featured designer at the Berlin, Germany based Stilnest. I was honored when they asked if I could design an exclusive sound wave jewelry collection for them.

It was an amazing experience and I am over the moon with the result -SoundScapes.  Each piece is a sculptural landscape representing the words "I - Love - You."  You can find out more about the collection and my inspirations for it here.

A Baton

One last thing to "note" concerning sound waves.  I recently created a conductor's baton using the famous first four notes from Beethoven's 5th Symphony.  You know, "duh-duh-duh-duuuum!" Well I got it in the hands of Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra conductor, Lawrence Loh and he liked it!  Check out his Instagram photo below! It was even featured in 3DPrint.com!

Thanks again for making Joy Complex a reality!  And, to leave you with some words of wisdom from Oscar Wilde:
remember, be yourself; everyone else is already taken.
