#JoiTorii Project

Announcing the #JoiTorii Project

 Purple Torii - Ohio

The #JoiTorii Project is an attempt to bring the world together through technology and photography. It strives to bring a little bit of the mysterious to the everyday; a bit of fun and whimsy to the staid and normal.

Anyone can participate! All you need is access to a 3d printer.  I have uploaded my Pocket Torii to ThingiverseCults3D, and Pinshape for anyone to download and print.

Don’t have a printer?  That’s OK,  you can also buy a little Torii for $8.00 from my Shapeways shop

Once you have your printed torii bring it with you and take a photo of it!  Tag the photo #joitorii on Instgram/Tumblr/Twitter so we can see where all the little gates end up around the world.

Eventually, I would like to collect the most interesting and inspiring photos into a book. I would like to write the unique story about how and where the Torii was photographed and the person who took the photo.

About Torii

Only found at Shinto shrines, a Torii Gate demarcates the overlap between our world and the world of spirits (kami). These places of overlap are where people and kami can most easily interact.

Some Torii gates, such as the Itsukushima Shrine are quite large. The Joi Konpurekkusu Pocket Torii is a whimsical pocket sized interpretation of Torii that pays homage to traditional forms. The top beam, the kasagi, is reinforced underneath by a second horizontal lintel called the shimaki. Finally the intersecting beam, the nuki, connects the two main pillars, or hashira, each of which curve upward.

The Joi Konpurekkusu Pocket Torii is the perfect travel companion!  At home wherever you go, just place it at the special places you visit around the world.

Use the #JoiTorii tag to see where others have photographed their Torii.

The more photos and tags the more linked we all become!

Join Me for Shapeways Small Business Bootcamp October 24

Anyone in the New York City area on October 24th who has an interest in art, design, 3D printing and alcohol should join me at the Shapeways Small Business Bootcamp.

Did you know that although it’s still pretty new in the minds of most, that 3D printing is already powering small businesses and empowering creative entrepreneurs to create new ventures every day? If you want to learn more or want to learn how to better focus your current initiatives join me (and many others) for the first ever Shapeways Small Business Symposium. It will be a day of entrepreneurial and design inspiration! You’ll get advice on business planning, marketing and designing 3D printed products too.

I'm a panelist at the event and will be there for the whole shebang. I am very excited to learn from contemporaries in my field and know it is going to be a great event. Speakers include entrepreneurs like myself who have launched successful businesses - mine are Joy Complex and 3D Racetracks - using 3D printing.  Shapeways staff members will also be on hand who are experts in the 3D printing design and the production process. Participants will come away with a deeper knowledge about the mechanics of 3D printing and design and the tools they need to launch, or grow, their business with 3D printing.

The Shapeways Small Business Bootcamp is hosted by Union Square Ventures. The event is free and light breakfast and lunch are provided. Advance registration is required. Please reserve your spot here.

It's gonna be fun! And although it is a bootcamp, there will be no pushups or live fire drills. And afterwards there will be drinks and cool people to talk to!  To quote a certain furniture salesman, “Come on down!”

My Recent ArtCorgi Experience

In One Word - Pawsome!

I recently won second place in Pinshape’s 3D printing wall art contest (Here’s my entry). The prize?  A super cool opportunity to get a portrait done by ArtCorgi!  Don’t know what ArtCorgi is?  I didn't know either (strange since they have gotten a lot of press) but since I redeemed my prize and received my portrait, I’ve been telling everyone I know about it.

Here’s why: it’s really a great service.  ArtCorgi is like a tasting table of artists.  You browse samples, choose an artist that has a style you like, and commission that artist to create a work of art just for you. Art commissions for all!

Art Corgi procedure

Painting of Man and Dogs

Portrait of a Cavalier with His Hunting Dogs

No longer must you be a 16th century aristocrat to commission a portrait of you and your faithful hound!  Today, ArtCorgi democratizes the process so that anyone can commission a portrait of themselves and their faithful hound.  And I did exactly that.

The process was easy, more so in my case because Simone Collins (one of the founders of ArtCorgi) contacted and congratulated me on my Pinshape prize and outlined how we were to proceed. She presented some ideas as to what others have commissioned:

  • Facebook / Twitter avatar (or cover photo)
  • Computer desktop background
  • Gift for a friend or family member
  • Pet portrait
  • Holiday card or stationery design

I immediately focused on  the notion of a Pet Portrait because I am slightly obsessed with my dog Lola.  I have tons of photos of her but because I am always behind the lens, I have very few pictures with her.  This was my chance to fix that.

I emailed Simone back my intention and she very quickly presented me with a list of artists and links to their galleries. One of the artists had a style very similar to Patrick Nagal, whose work I am fond of, and I immediately emailed back “I want me and Lola - Patrick Nagal style!” I forwarded her some photos of me and of the lovely Lola and waited.

A couple days later I had an email with an attached sketch - a digital proof for me to examine to make sure I liked where things were going.  I liked.  My only critique was that I wanted us to look a little happier - because, this was a happy occasion!  Me and Lola in frame together!

A few days after I approved the sketch I opened my email and there was the final Patrick Nagal inspired portrait of Me and Lola.  Perfect for printing, using as a Facebook photo (my current photo) or anything else I could imagine - for personal use.  Sadly, I could not use the portrait commercially on say, a line of t-shirts (which I am sure would fly off the shelves). Oh well.  I’ll just have to stick with doing a canvas print for my home office!

Final Portrat of Lola & Jeremy

The whole process was very easy and fun.  I’ve had a ton of compliments on the portrait - though my wife simply shook her head saying, “Of course. You and the dog.” (Sometimes I think she’s jealous.)

I highly and whole heartedly recommend ArtCorgi to anyone who wants to create a unique gift for family or friends (or enemies if you want to make them jealous with rage).  It’s so unique and very reasonably priced.  Yes, this one was free for me but I suspect I will be back money in hand for some more portraits of me and Lola, I mean my family.

New Class at TechShop Pittsburgh: How to Start and Run a Successful Shapeways Shop

Joy Complex is proud to announce the first class on "How to Start and Run a Successful Shapeways Shop" at TechShop Pittsburgh!

The goal of this class is to provide students with enough understanding of the Shapeways platform so they can use it to make and refine 3D printed models that they can then market and sell via the Shapeways marketplace. Anything you learn will definitely be applicable to any other endeavors you have (for example selling your items on Etsy).

TechShop is a vibrant, creative community that provides access to tools, software and space. You can make virtually anything at TechShop. (Including ZeGo - the Swiss Ary Knife of 3d Printers - which was tested and is made at TechShop Pittsburgh!)

Shapeways is the world's leading 3D Printing marketplace and community. With Shapeways, individuals can make, buy and sell their own products to people all over the world.

Both companies share a similar ethos -  empowering members of their communities by giving them access to technology they normally wouldn’t have access to. The results are the amazing art, products, and innovation that both companies make possible.

The germ for Joy Complex's success using Shapeways started with a Makerbot class at Techshop.

Joy Complex is very excited about this opportunity and can't want to meet with everyone who can attend!
