This Apple Watch cover was inspired by the Art Deco style of visual arts and design which was most popular during the first third of the 20th century. If you want a modern timepiece just as at home in the Chrysler Building as it is on your wrist, this is it.
I used to work in the Chrysler Building. The striking art deco mailboxes in the lobby always caught my eye. Of all the things to notice in that lobby, why the mailboxes struck a chord in me is a mystery, but I love the look of them and kept my eyes open for similar mailboxes in buildings from the same period throughout the city. I thought about making a book of the art deco mailboxes of New York until I discovered that someone else already did. It's a lovely book to flip through. (Here’s a link)
This watch is modeled after one of those mail boxes. If you look closely at the form you can see how I appropriated the stepped lines and angles. This is however, a watch and not a mailbox, and closer to jewelry than a receptacle for letters so a bit of embellishment doesn't hurt.
I toned things down and decided to cast the penultimate version of the cover in silver. It has few areas with no adornment because sometimes, less is more.
